Chat workloads are organized around isolated question-and-answer requests, whereas agents pursue tasks through numerous model and tool calls. A single agent task may operate autonomously for minutes or hours. Consequently, optimizing one response can have little effect on the duration experienced by the user. The proposed primary metric is end-to-end task completion latency.
Why it matters: Infrastructure benchmarks based only on token speed or individual-request latency may misrepresent actual agent performance.
Supporting evidence
The user does not really care about the latency of one individual request. The user cares about when the whole task is completed.
