Collison models knowledge as a hierarchy resembling computer memory. Asking an agent to retrieve or calculate something may be useful, but it introduces more latency than already knowing it. Deeply internalized concepts also permit many rapid mental iterations that would be cumbersome through prompts. He therefore considers abandoning first-principles learning premature, even if model capabilities continue improving.
Why it matters: Students and builders should use AI as an extension of cognition rather than treating it as a substitute for developing cognitive capacity.
