ERA begins by translating a scientific objective into code that returns a measurable score. A conversational agent helps the scientist define the task and produces a Python notebook containing the scoring function. The system then modifies the notebook and evaluates whether each modification improves the score. Machine learning is one instance of this framework, but the same approach can address mathematical approximations, physical design, forecasting, and counterfactual estimation.
Why it matters: A reliable score converts open-ended scientific software development into an iterative search problem, but the usefulness of the result depends on whether that score faithfully represents the scientific objective.

we found that many different scientific problems uh can be mapped into something we call scorable tasks.
