Shipper expects two dominant modes of AI-assisted work. Companies will use shared agents for delegated, asynchronous tasks, while individuals will perform much of their daily work inside desktop agent environments such as Codex or Claude Co-work. These environments could become operating systems for knowledge work, containing browsers and the SaaS applications people already use. The prediction is not that every existing tool disappears, but that the agent becomes the primary surface through which those tools are accessed.
Why it matters: Organizations should prepare both a shared agent layer and an agent-compatible application layer rather than treating AI as a single chatbot feature.
Supporting evidence
One is everyone's going to have at least one agent that they talk to, that they can offload work to. Second is that most of the work that you do is actually going to happen on your computer in an environment like Codex or Claude Co-work.
